A fellow Canadian has joined the list! Derek Andrews lives in River John, Nova Scotia. (Amazing, that such a small place like River John has such a detailed/interesting site, focusing on tourism, bringing in real estate agents, etc. Go River John!) What does Derek do? He’s a woodturner. A what now? Here’s Wikipedia’s entry on woodturning
Woodturning is a form of woodworking, that is used to create wooden objects (e.g. a bowl or a table leg) on a lathe using cutting tools. Woodturning differs from most other forms of woodworking, in that the wood is moving while a (relatively) stationary tool is used to cut and shape it. Many intricate shapes and designs can be made by turning wood.
It’s probably easiest if you take a look at his site: Seafoam Woodturning Studio.
Even though Derek is a craftsman, and his work doesn’t involve using a computer or the Internet, Derek’s no slouch online. He’s got 2 blogs — The Tool Rest and The Chip Shop — and an online store.
So after Basil visits Australia he’ll be trekking back across the globe to Canada. And from the looks of it, River John is quite a nice, quaint village; I think Basil will appreciate the R&R.
