Basil didn’t show at the Savannah airport last night when we went to pick him up. We waited at the security check point but didn’t see him. When the flight crew came out I asked them if they’d had a donkey on board.
The flight attendant made a comment about an unruly passenger in seat 14B. But no, they hadn’t seen a code-writing donkey.
So we went home.
Then we got a call at about 2:30 AM. We were dead asleep and unfortunately Gorgeous got to the phone before I did. She hung up in a huff. Said it was an obscene phone call. When I asked her to describe the call she said there was lots of heavy breathing and talk about being friendly with certain body parts.
Since I was awake I checked the caller ID and realized that it was a number in Washington DC.
Basil.
I think he was trying to tell us that as long as he was in DC he was making a stop off to try and connect with his new friend, Dick Cheney.
I called the number back but he must have called from a pay phone because someone answered in Spanish. The language barrier ended up being too much at nearly 3 AM. By the time I went through my various attempts of different phrases for “Can I please speak to the donkey who just called me from there?” the woman on the other end was getting a bit frustrated. In fact, she actually seemed pretty angry when she hung up on me.
I suspect she thought I was making an obscene call of my own.
So Ben, if you hear from Basil, please let us know when we should expect to see him get to Savannah.

Aargh…that silly donkey. Between the mile high club and trying to gain access to visit Dick Cheney.
I’m going to try and track him down now, Chris. Thanks.
[...] I was finally able to track Basil down, and I’m happy to say he’s safe and sound. Yes, he’s in Washington DC, and yes, he tried to visit Dick Cheney, but luckily he didn’t pursue it too far, and the guards at the White House turned him back fairly quickly. [...]
