Well Basil’s flight got in to Savannah International Airport right on time last night. He seemed to have a bit of an entourage with him as he came strutting up the terminal out past the security checkpoint. It took Gorgeous and I a little while to work out what all the buzz was about. Apparently a code-writing donkey is a bit of a novelty, at least on United.
Apparently Basil had run afoul of United’s Pet Policy when he tried to board. We overheard him telling the crowd around him that it was amazing how quickly call to the White House on his cell phone cleared things up.
We had a bit of a challenging convincing Basil that we were the folks he was supposed to be meeting. He kept mumbling something like, “But you don’t look Indian.” and I finally realized that Basil was somehow under the impression that with a last name like Cree, we were part of that Native American Tribe.
Sorry, Basil. No relation.
Fortunately we had a pretty long wait for his luggage down at baggage claim. Basil doesn’t travel light! He made some joke about being a pack mule at one point in his career.
The whole time Bail seemed pretty skiddish to me, and I couldn’t figure it out. Basil kept asking us all kinds of questions about Lions. How much do they eat? How fast do they run? Is it legal to hunt them? And did we know the local laws regarding firearms?
It was all very confusing until Basil mentioned something about knowing all about it because he’d just watched the Lion King and Gorgeous figured out he thought he was heading to the African Savanna. Gorgeous assured him he would have no problems with lions during his stay with us!
Basil seemed quite relieved.
In fact he felt so good that he insisted on having us stop off at the local Waffle House on the way to our house. He assured us it was “just for a little snack.”
I had no idea that a donkey could eat that many waffles! Talk about impressive! I even overheard the shift supervisor call the manager to give her a heads up that they should see about getting their delivery truck to come in a day early because they went through so much batter.
Well Basil said he wanted to lay low this morning. He said he was wiped out after all the things he did during his lay over in DC. (He sure snores loud!) I think we’ll show him some of the sights of Savannah starting tomorrow afternoon.
