Steve Anzelc knows networking. You only have to look at his LinkedIn profile to see that. And Steve’s got a career so varied it’s amazing. From what I can tell, Steve is currently actively involved with an art gallery and a consulting/funding company (both of which he started, I believe.) The consulting company, aptly named Anzelc Consulting helps technical and engineering firms find funding.
Steve’s located in Dayton, Ohio and Basil will be journeying from Belgium to get there! Basil will be with Philippe Borremans in Bellingen, Belgium before traveling across the Atlantic to get back into the Midwest.
Interestingly, both Steve and Philippe found Where Is Basil through LinkedinBloggers, a Yahoo group with a great number of interesting members.
There’s a lot of information about Dayton, Ohio on Wikipedia. (The images are from Wikipedia.)
Dayton may be a fairly small city but it’s no slouch historically. The Wright Brothers where from there as was John Henry Patterson, founder of NCR.
Apparently, Dayton is nicknamed the Gem City.
Steve or anyone else care to tell us why?
I know Steve’s going to do a great job showing Basil around Dayton. I’ve found a few sites that might give us a preview of some hotspots they’ll be visiting:
* National Museum of the United States Air Force
One tip Steve: Don’t talk to Basil too much about getting funding. He’s always got “the next best thing” on the go and you know how eager he is to spend my money! His most recent project involved something about “donkeys in space” (Don’t ask. Or do, cause it’s pretty funny!)

I wonder whether Basil will get a chance to see whether Mr. Tanner, the baritone (made famous by Harry Chapin), is still cleaning clothes in Daytona Ohio.
I’m not familiar with Mr. Tanner, but Steve Anzelc will have to let us know. It will be interesting to see what each person who joins the list plans for the code-writing donkey.
Thanks for stopping by Leah!
I forgot to answer this question about Why is Dayton called the “Gem City?” Well here it is.
Answer: The “Gem City” name is taken from the following quote from the August 18, 1845 Daily Cincinnati Chronicle: “The most indifferent observer will not fail to notice Dayton. The wide streets, kept in such excellent order, the noble blocks of stores, filled with choice, and, of course, cheap goods, and, more than all, the exceeding beauty and neatness of the dwellings…It may be fairly said…that Dayton is the gem of all our interior towns. It possesses wealth, refinement, enterprise, and a beautiful country…”
When was Dayton founded and whom was it named for?
Answer: The first settlers of Dayton arrived on April 1, 1796. Dayton was named for General Jonathan Dayton, a general in the Revolutionary War and one of the proprietors of the land that became Dayton.
