After recuperating from his episode with heat exhaustion in the Ellsworths’ backyard in Mesa, AZ, Basil decided to do some extra exploring.
“Isn’t Superstition Mountain nearby?” Basil asked. “Actually, it is only a couple miles from here,” said the Ellsworths. “Sounds fascinating!” Basil said, and with that he was off to see the mountain for himself.
After a long day’s hike, Basil returned back to the Ellsworths. He found time along the way to play cards with his new friend the Rattlesnake and enjoy a popular game among the Rattlesnake family called “scare the scorpions.” He also stopped by the Superstition Mountain Museum to pick up a few trinkets and gulp down some water. As he greeted the museum workers, Basil also slipped a little golden something into each hand he shook. “The secret will stay with me,” Basil furtively chuckled.
Unfortunately, the Ellsworths had to spend the rest of the weekend removing cactus needles from poor Basil’s rear-end. Basil now knows that when playing “scare the scorpions” one must be careful to avoid anything prickly looking!

Basil! I am so jealous! I spent a week in the Superstitions in college leading a backpacking trip… did you find any of the Dutchman’s lost gold there? Or did you get a look from the top of Weaver’s Needle? Ah… the good old days. I [heart] Arizona.
Easton - if you take Basil up to Prescott, please tell Thumb Butte I said hello!! Can’t wait to hear more about Basil’s adventures in the desert!
